Cold at the top, warm at the bottom
This is the classic air pocket. Air collects at the highest point of the radiator and stops water reaching the top section. It is the one symptom most households can deal with themselves using a bleed key and a cloth.
What matters more than the bleeding is why air keeps arriving. A system that needs bleeding once after work has been done is normal. A system that needs bleeding every few weeks is drawing air in somewhere, and that is worth investigating rather than repeating.

Cold at the bottom, warm at the top
This is the opposite problem and a more serious one. Sludge and corrosion debris settle in the bottom of the radiator and block the flow across the lower section. The radiator feels warm where you touch it at head height and stone cold along the bottom edge.
Bleeding will not help, because the problem is not air. The realistic options are cleaning the system so the debris is removed and stops circulating, and fitting protection so it does not build up again. Left alone it spreads to other radiators and eventually reaches the boiler.

- Ask about a filter and inhibitor so the problem does not simply return.
One radiator cold, everything else fine
Start with the valves. A thermostatic valve with a pin stuck down is extremely common and looks exactly like a failed radiator. With the head removed, the pin should move freely and spring back; if it is seized, the radiator stays cold regardless of what the rest of the system does.
If both valves are open and free, the next likely explanation is balancing. Radiators nearest the pump take the easiest path, and a distant radiator can be starved simply because the others are taking the flow. Balancing is an adjustment rather than a repair, and it costs nothing in parts.
- Remove the valve head and check the pin moves freely.
- Confirm the lockshield valve at the other end is actually open.
- Consider balancing if the cold radiator is the furthest from the boiler.
Everything lukewarm, nothing properly hot
When the whole system underperforms rather than one radiator, the usual suspects are the pump, the controls or the amount of debris in circulation. A system that has never been cleaned and has no filter will gradually lose performance everywhere rather than in one place.
This is the pattern where a repair visit is genuinely worth it, because guessing at components is expensive and the diagnosis usually takes less time than replacing the wrong part.
